We have had the privilege of collaborating with Cumellas on the creation of their new showroom and office space in the industrial zone of Sant Cugat. The company, led by Xavier Papiol, who is the third generation of a family with over 60 years of history in the sector. The company specializes in contemporary rugs crafted by artisans from India, Pakistan and Nepal using traditional techniques. Their commitment to exclusive collections fuses modern design with artisanal expertise.
The project emerged from a two-storey industrial warehouse that required radical reorganisation. Part of the upper floor was removed to create a space with double-height, enhancing openness and visibility. The façade was liberated with large windows, allowing passers-by to discover its interior, transforming the showroom into a living display where the rugs take center stage. A key feature is a six-meter walnut and fluted glass lattice that provides privacy to the office area and acts as a backdrop for suspended rugs, which are displayed dynamically using a unique pulley system.
The atmosphere is crafted through warm, natural materials: lime plaster walls, micro-mortar floors, and suspended acoustic ceilings in toasted tones. In the main office, a tensioned ceiling made from a natural fiber rug in earth tones and black adds acoustic comfort as well as a creative wink to the product itself. The showroom incorporates mobile furniture for sample material, sliding systems to organize finished products, and a warehouse with direct street access. The upper floor houses offices, meeting rooms and restrooms, visually connected through glass partitions that allow natural light to flow freely.
The furniture combines pieces from Nikari —a Nordic brand represented by Cumellas— with designs by Mobles 114, Muuto, &tradition, Vibia and Santa & Cole. Lighting by Viabizzuno provides warm, focused illumination that enhances the rugs without distorting their colors.
The result is a space that truly reflects Cumellas’ essence: the union of craftsmanship and contemporary design, simplicity and sophistication, created to convey the excellence of their products and their commitment to artisanal tradition.
